Problem
In a newspaper drive, four classes collected 32 1/2 kg, 62 3/4 kg, 58 1/2kg and 41 1/2kg. What was the average collection per class?
Answer
The average collection per class is 48 13/16 kg
Solution:
To get the average, add all the newspaper collected then divide by the total number of classes.
sum of all newspaper ÷ total number of classes = average
(32 1/2 + 62 3/4 + 58 1/2 + 41 1/2) ÷ 4
= [193 + ( 1/2 + 3/4 + 1/2 + 1/2) ] ÷ 4
= [193 + ( 3/2 + 3/4) ] ÷ 4
= [193 + (6/4 + 3/4) ] ÷ 4
= (193 + 9/4) ÷ 4
= (195 1/4) ÷ 4
= (781/4) × (1/4)
= 781/16
= 48 13/16 kg
