Answer:
1. Baking a cake - chemical change
2. Crushing a can - physical change
3. boiling water - physical change
4. Rotting food - chemical change
5. dying hair - chemical change
6. burning tires - chemical change
7. dissolving salt - physical change
8. rusting nail - chemical change
9. combining paints - physical change
10. digestion of food - chemical change
Explanation:
Materials undergo changes. These can be physical or chemical changes. Let us differentiate the two kinds of changes:
Physical Change
When we say physical change, it is a change in the form of the material without changing its characteristics, composition, or identity. For example, when you crush a can, it is still a can with the same properties. There is just a change in the shape and form of the can. Change in phase such as melting of ice, or boiling of water is also a physical change.
Chemical Change
A chemical change is a kind of change that changes the composition, structure, and identity of the material. A chemical reaction is involved thus atoms rearrange, or bonds are either broken or formed. It leads to the formation of a new substance. Some of the indicators that chemical change took place are the formation of gas or bubbles, change of temperature, production of residue or precipitate, or the production of odor. For example, when a nail forms rust, the iron reacts with oxygen to form a new substance which is iron oxide or rust. Dyeing of hair is a chemical change unless it is a temporary hair dye. But permanent hair dye involves a chemical reaction between hair pigments and chemicals in dye that causes the change in color.
