Activity 2: FIND MY ROOTS!
Directions: Read the following passage and classify the cultural practices presented
in the text whether they reflect the culture of the Japanese or Filipinos.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
Japanese and Filipinos are often considered to have resemblances.
Sometimes, these two may share the same qualities probably because the
Philippines was once ruled by Japan. However, if you observe at them intensely,
you will notice that they too have unique qualities.
The Japanese are known to use chopsticks while Filipinos make use of
spoon and fork when eating. With regards to greetings, the Japanese people
usually bow to their elders. In contrast, Filipinos greet their family and friends
through hugs and kisses or "beso-beso". In the conduct of weddings, Filipinos
usually follow Western traditions and indulge in lavish celebrations. Contrary to
this, the Japanese are more conservative in their weddings. They wear traditional
costumes and conduct tea parties as part of their celebration.
You see, the Japanese and the Filipinos really have unique practices. They
may share similar practices but if you observe them intensely, you will still
discover more.
