Activity 2
Directions: Summarize each text below using a single, definitive sentence.
1. There are seven continents on our planet. The continents are the huge landmasses that
separated by the waters of the oceans. The seven continents on our planet
are: Africa, Asia, Antarctica, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania Australia.
2. Tsunamis are large and powerful ocean waves that grow as they reach the shore. They can
cause major damage as they rush inland flooding cities and destroying homes. Tsunamis are
caused by a large displacement of water. Think of when you are sitting in the bathtub and you
move forward in the tub. This can cause a relatively large wave. The same thing happens in
the ocean when a large amount of water is suddenly moved.
3. The Solar System is made up of the Sun and all of the smaller objects that move around it.
Apart from the Sun, the largest members of the Solar System are the eight major planets.
Nearest the Sun are four fairly small, rocky planets or Terrestrial Planets - Mercury, Venus,
Earth and Mars. On the far side of the asteroid belt are the four gas giants or Jovian Planets -
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These planets are much bigger than Earth, but very
lightweight for their size.
4. There are a lot of benefits to using renewable energy. First, naturally replenished energy
resources are found over wide geographical areas, in contrast to non-renewable resources,
which exist only in a limited number of countries. In addition to that, rapid deployment of
renewable energy and energy efficiency is resulting in significant energy security, climate
change mitigation, and economic benefits. The results of a recent review of the literature
concluded that as greenhouse gas emitters begin to be held liable for damages resulting from
greenhouse gas emissions resulting in climate change, a high value for liability mitigation
would provide powerful incentives for deployment of renewable energy technologies,
5. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2
diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. Obesity
is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive dietary calories, lack of physical
activity, and genetic susceptibility, although a few cases are caused primarily by genes,
endocrine disorders, medications or psychiatric illness.
