People in Baguio, especially in crowded areas, like were infected by thevirus because
An official of the city's Health Services Office (HSO) on Tuesday urged the people with flu-like symptoms to stay away from crowded areas especially that Baguio is entering the Panagbenga season amid the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) scare sweeping the world.
“If you are sneezing with colds and feverish, I ask you to stay home and avoid crowds,” Dr. Rowena Galpo told media during a forum at the Baguio City Hall.
Baguio is bracing for the influx of tourists once again for the Panagbenga or season of blossoming that will kick off on Feb. 1. with the children’s parade.
Galpo said they have already made the advisories and cautioned residents and tourists here while also telling them to take precautionary measures so as not to contract or spread the deadly virus, its transmission is almost assured at close contacts.
“It’s through one’s secretions that the virus is spread so I implore people to observe proper ethics when sneezing,” said Galpo, who was the city’s acting health officer when the meningococcemia scare hit the city in 2005.
Galpo also asked locals to practice a healthy lifestyle, avoid smoking and reduce drinking as well as have regular exercise to remain fit and healthy to be disease-resistant.
Basic hygienic practices must be observed too like hand washing every now and then, she said.
Galpo is set also to give advisory for hotel owners and managers to be more vigilant and report if there are suspected cases among their guests, especially foreigners or those who came from countries that have reported cases of coronavirus.
“We have to know of the guests’ travel history if they came from a country which has reported cases of coronavirus infection,” she said.
“We urge them to report cases so we will know what we can do,” she added.
Galpo said their office and the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) are capable of handling coronavirus infection cases.
“Our office has an established system. First is surveillance and if there is a case, then we isolate the person, then have him or her tested, and finally observe the people he or she came into contact with the past days,” she said.
Observation is usually from 14 to 20 days and if the contacts show any flu-like symptoms then “hopefully not, there is already an infection,” she said.
Galpo said experience with past scares has made Baguio doctors more capable of handling cases of virus spread.
She said medical personnel know how to handle cases unlike 15 years ago when as an acting city health officer, they were unprepared to meet the meningococcemia scare that led to Baguio’s closure from the rest of the country for a period of time.
“We were then caught by surprise. We do not know how to handle communications and we do not know how to face the media and what to tell them,” she recalled.
By that time, the City Epidemiology Surveillance Unit was just about to be established and the HSO had no experts to deal with it.
It was a disaster as Baguio had to tap its calamity fund to address the spread of the disease.
Deaths were reported in the city.
Galpo said health personnel have learned their lessons.
“I have learned too, with the many viral scares that came after like SARS, MERS, Ah1N1 and recently African swine fever,” she said.
