Answer:
The best we can do is point you in the right directions to start studying.
Basics first. “Ancient” and “pre-historic” are not necessarily synonyms. When we are talking of the “Ancient World,” Classical Rome and Classical Greece and the Egyptians from Old Kingdom out are literate cultures.
Pre-historic is specifically those cultures for which there are not written accounts. This gets a little blurry, because there are Hittite and Ugaritic and Babylonian et al writings. And you’ve got edge cases like the Minoans (we can’t read their scripts) and the Mycenae (we can read their scripts but what we get is basically inventory).
And the academic study of Art is older than the academic study of History and it has its own ways of dividing up periods. So if you ask an archaeologist about the period of an artwork you may get different language than if you ask a collector.
But anyhow!
What I am saying is that you need to narrow down or at least understand a bit of the history of decorative art and the ways in which it is categorized and described before you can even embark on learning about techniques and principles.
I’d suggest with a good “History of Art” course or textbook, one with a focus on the earlier periods if possible.
These, as I alluded to above, are going to be really thin about what to archaeologists et al are important distinctions in the decorative styles of pottery and other typical forms of the earliest cultures. If that turns out to be your interest, you may not be able to do a generalized overview at all, but you might have to focus on “Culture of Pre-Contact Americas” or “Culture of the Bronze Age in Europe” as subject areas.
I hope this gives you a starting point!
