, Aristotle’s theory of communication is the place to start in communication theory. Aristotle makes the natural first move in his analysis by assuming that communication is from A to B. But he is an astute man and notices that the message from A to B has to run the gauntlet of all the factors which determine the interpretation and the effect of the speech on the ‘audience’, all the psychological stuff, all the associations, all the values, etc. of the listener. All those affect what passes from A to B, that is, what B gets is his/her interpretation of A’s sounds and Aristotle gives a sensible analysis of that problem. He mentions that A is trying to affect the mind of B, to get B to experience the desired psychological event.
