1. The musculoskeletal system provides support to the body, enabling it to stand erect and to move. The system protects inner organs, produces red blood cells, and provides for the storage of minerals.
2. In terms of function the axial skeleton provides protection for the vital organs such as the rib cage protecting the heart and the lungs. The Appendicular skeleton allows for movement and is what skeletal muscle attaches to.
3. There are 3 types of muscles: The skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle.
- Skeletal muscles enable humans to move and perform daily activities. They play an essential role in respiratory mechanics and help in maintaining posture and balance. They also protect the vital organs in the body.
- Cardiac muscle is an involuntary striated muscle tissue found only in the heart and is responsible for the ability of the heart to pump blood.
- Smooth muscle is found in the walls of hollow organs like your intestines and stomach. They work automatically without you being aware of them. Smooth muscles are involved in many 'housekeeping' functions of the body. The muscular walls of your intestines contract to push food through your body.
