after 1 and half hrs of baking the crust was still not crispy (though had begun to brown)rather but kind of soft and there was some oozing of wet syrup on the top. would the crust have hardened by itself over time in a cold oven? oven was preheated at 150 and cooked at 120

Did you add baking powder to the recipe? Also, remember to NOT put it in the oven while cold. Only after oven has heated.
i think you might not have used enough cornflour (cornstarch if you are american)
use 1 tsp of cornflour for each egg white
