Problem:
A parabolic arch has a height of 16m and a width of 28m at the base. If the vertex of the parabola is at the top of the arch, how wide is the arch at the point 11m above its base?
Solution:
x² = -4ay
(x, y)
(14, -16)
14² = -4a(-16)
196 = 64a
196/64 = a
a = 3.0625
x² = -4ay
x² = -4(3.0625)y
x² = -12.25y
x² = -12.25(-5)
x² = 61.25
x = √61.25
x = 7.826 m
Width of arch at the pt 11m above the base:
W = 7.826(2)
W = 15.652 m
