a. Setting - Arnold Schoenberg’s Setting of peripetie (1909)
b. Musical composition - Peripetie is the fourth movement of schoenberg’s five orchestral pieces . It was written in 1909, but revised in 1922 and 1949. Schoenberg was reluctant to give each movement a title as this was a distraction from the music. The title is from a greek word meaning sudden changes.
c. Role of composer/audience - Arnold Schoenberg was an austrian-american composer who created new methods of musical composition involving atonality, namely serialism and the 12-tone row. He was also an influential teacher; among his most significant pupils were Alban Berg and Anton Webern.
