SET AND SUBSETS
Sets
A set is a mathematical model for a collection of different things a set contains elements or members, which can be mathematical objects of any kind: numbers, symbols, points in space, lines, other geometrical shapes, variables, or even other sets.
Empty Set -- The set with no element is the empty set
Singleton -- a set with a single element is a singleton.
Order of Sets
The order of a set defines the number of elements a set is having. It describes the size of a set. The order of the set is also known as cardinality.
The size of set whether it is is a finite set or an infinite set, said to be set of finite order or infinite order, respectively.
Subsets
Definitions of Subsets
A subset is a set whose elements are all members of another set.
The symbol "⊆" means "is a subset of".
The symbol "⊂" means "is a proper subset of".
A set is a collection of objects or elements, grouped in curly braces, such as {a,b,c,d}. If a set A is a collection of even numbers and set B consists of {2,4,6}, then B is said to be a subset of A, denoted by B⊆A and A is the superset of B.
Set A is said to be a subset of Set B if all the elements of Set A are also present in Set B. In other words, set A is contained inside Set B.
We can also write the subset notation as:
A ⊂ B if x ∊ A ⇒ x∊ B
According to the equation given above, “A is a subset of B only if ‘x’ is an element of A as well as an element of B.” Each set is a subset of its own set, and a void set or empty set is a subset of all sets.
