Types of mass movement and their definition.
1. Fall - This is often described as a quick or extremely fast rate of movement, with the materials involved in freefalling. Earthquakes and erosion processes are typical causes of falls.
2. Slide - This is one of the most common forms of mass movement and occurs when the toe of the slope is undercut. They have a moderate rate of movement and typically move largely intact or broken pieces. They can be subdivided into types, translational and rotational. The surface of separation on translational slides is flat or two-dimensional while rotational slides move with rotation. Rotational slides are also called “slumps”.
3. Flow - This is the most destructive form of mass movement. Flows include a lot of water, which causes the slope material to lose consistency and transform into a slurry. They are guided by the shape of the terrain and travel fast.
4. Spread - This movement is created by liquefaction, which is the transformation of saturated loose material, such as sands or silts, into a liquid-like condition. Rapid ground motion, most typically during earthquakes, triggers this process.
5. Topple - This is identified by rock tilting without collapsing or by the forwarding rotation of rocks. Topples move very quickly, and failure is often influenced by the fracture pattern in the rock. Material falls abruptly, sliding, bouncing, and rolling.
