52mm is pretty small and you really don't need risers unless your trucks are very loose. Wheelbite and shock are two things that will happen to you while you are skateboarding no matter if you have risers or not.
Personally, I don't skate with risers but I know a lot of people that do. If you like to lean and bend the board to turn instead of raising the front by pushing the tail, then get some risers and cruise around with looser trucks. Just beware that risers make tricks a lot harder.
52mm wheels should be fairly safe from wheelbite. If you go 54mm or above, risers are important, but smaller than that and it's more about comfort.
