Body measurements are a prerequisite to pattern construction. The size and fit of a garment depends upon the accuracy. At present, we are in the transition between traditional manual measuring by tape measure and computerized body scanning or using photographic systems. Manual measuring requires a high degree of skill and is time consuming. The techniques of body scanning are constantly improving and will supersede manual methods in the future. Whichever method is used, the first consideration is to decide which measurements are required. From the data collected, the development of size charts for pattern grading and garment production begins. Size chart formulation begins with the division of average body measurements artificially into categories to form a range of sizes. These average body measurements are obtained from surveys of body measurements. Each size is given a code, e.g. 10–12–14–16, or labelled small, medium, and large. There are five stages in developing size charts for garments, as described below.
