Answer:
Imagine you're a nobody.
You start a movement on gay rights. You want the community to receive equal attention in national decisions.
Since you're a nobody, with no following or say in important matters, you are ignored.
But you? You stand your ground. You continue to work towards the cause. You are slowly known to people now. Some even start appreciating you. They join you because they've had these ideas and notions too, but they weren't able to voice it earlier. You are the voice they've been waiting for.
Now that you're being recognised at a small scale, your intentions are laughed upon. The trolls wonder, ‘What ridiculous theories do you bring forward? It's not even going to last for a day.’ They don't take you seriously.
But you? You don't listen to these trolls. You continue to work towards the cause, this time with more efforts. Because you're at a point where one push can escalate this issue towards a larger audience; where one pull can demolish all of your hard work.
Your work starts talking for you. Your trolls realise you are unrelenting. They don't want you to win because:
It challenges their beliefs.
Your opinion can sway their mass-following.
You become a threat to the trolls.
So they will fight you. They will abuse you, torment you and break your bones.
By now, your body is shattered. Your spirit is a little shaken. Should you continue? Doubt creeps in.
Then, you see the effect of your collision. People have started following you. They are supporting you and gay rights in their own way. They are mending their beliefs for you, because they believe in you. They believe in your beliefs.
You see the kind of support you are getting from loved ones and strangers. That's when you can see yourself near the winning line, ahead of the trolls.
Instead of getting comfortable, you give one more push. Because you've not crossed the line yet.
You become the revolution. The larger institutions are forced to consider your request. The community wins when this is enforced in reality.
You win. The trolls are left out with nothing.
