CASE 1
1. In this scenario, the effectiveness of coconut juice in getting rid of the green slime on the shower head is being tested. The variable being tested is the type of treatment applied to each half of the shower head: coconut juice and water. This is an independent or predictor variable since it is manipulated or controlled by Andrew during the experiment.
2. The effect of the treatment used, whether coconut juice or water, is being observed in terms of the appearance of the green slime on each half of the shower head. The variable being observed is the presence or absence of changes in the appearance of the green slime. This is a dependent or response variable since it is measured or observed based on the treatment applied.
CASE 2
1. The independent variable in this experiment is the duration of exposure to the microwave. There are two levels of this independent variable: 10 seconds and 5 seconds. Brian manipulates this variable by subjecting one group of mice to a 10-second exposure and another group to a 5-second exposure.
2. The dependent variable in this experiment is the number of mice that can move the block of wood away from the food. Brian measures and records the number of mice in each group that are able to successfully move the block of wood. The ability to move the block of wood is dependent on the duration of exposure to the microwave, and thus serves as the outcome or response variable in this experiment.
