ETHICAL PRACTICES WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY
PLATO
CONCEPT OF LINKING ETHICAL PRACTICES TO HAPPINESS
Eudaimonia and arete, according to Plato, are the two fundamental concepts of ethics. Plato says that we should all strive towards the virtue of eudaimonia, which is also known as "well-being." Eudaimonia is the attribute of the ideal person, and ethics is largely merely a description of what such an ideal person would actually be like.
According to Plato, leading a good life entails exhibiting flawless integrity, which brings one closer to the higher plane of existence. Since virtue results from the lack of desires, being truly happy entails being content to the point that one has no more desires.
Eudaimonia: Real pleasure is a condition of emotion within oneself, whereas eudaimonia is the ultimate human good. In the Enlightenment meaning, happiness is typically thought of as a succession of recurrent joys. It is an attitude toward life. On the other side, eudaimonia is action that lasts a lifetime.
Arete: The promotion of greatness in people. However, arete focuses at building the abilities, both physical and ethical, that lead to a positive existence and does not narrowly limit greatness to "being the best," "earning renown or honor," or "winning."
