How can I become an R&B studio guitarist? Would I need years of experience?

Remember that Rhythm & Blues comes from the soul. Their are good upbeat tempos in R&B and whatever instrument you play, it has to be played with feeling.
To add to what's been written so far, studio work is a close-knit community. Its all about who you know. People get called up for work based on recommendations from others who either know their ability on guitar or just know that they'd fit in nicely on a given recording. This isn't the 70s anymore so what work that's out there is very limited to those already within a given circle of musicians.
Absolutely get excellent at playing & sight reading. But!!! also get good at being known by those who already have the gig & can feel comfortable they can call on you if the need arises. Once you've got 1 or 2 good gigs under your belt, you MIGHT move from being a total unknown to being on someone's 'first call' rolodex.
To do studio work.. YOU MUST BE VERY GOOD.. you have to be able to SIGHT READ MUSIC THE FIRST TIME THROUGH and you need to be able to AUDITION better than people like ME who have been professional musicians for over 50 years or more.
Studio work is really sought after.. and if you don't have the chops.. you don't get the gigs.. and the competition is fierce at the auditions... you DO know that.. right? You also need to be a member of one of the UNIONS.. you do know that too.. right?
