1. Smile!
As I mentioned in my post the other day (The Number One Way To Encourage Someone), I’m of the firm belief that an encouraging smile is a really powerful thing.
2. Listen
For those occasions when a smile isn’t enough on its own, and we need to come up with a few words of encouragement, I think that listening to the person is the most important thing we can do.
3. Acknowledge
Once we understand what the issue is, an important part of encouraging someone is to validate their feelings, and try to understand why they feel that way.
4. Catch them doing something right and let them know you noticed
This is one of those tips that always comes up on management courses and in parenting books alike.
It’s very effective because it shows the person that you’ve noticed them making the effort, and because you’ve pointed it out they’re more likely to repeat it in the future.
Definitely a win-win situation!
5. Share positive thoughts as soon as they occurs to you
Now this won’t always be possible, but if you can it’s always better to mention it straight away when we notice someone doing well or putting in a lot of effort.
6. Praise effort and progress, no matter how small
It’s the best way to encourage someone to keep trying.
Having said that, it’s also definitely good to make a point of praising people for ‘going the extra mile’ too.
7. Tell them how they helped
The more specific you can be the better. Give the person you’re trying to encourage details of exactly how they had a positive impact on you or your organisation.
8. Boost morale
You can easily do this by giving the person you’re trying to encourage genuine praise in front of other people.
This is really powerful, because not only do they get the effect of YOUR encouragement but there’s a chance the other person will join in too!
9. Notice when people encourage you
If we make a point of noticing when someone else has behaved in an encouraging way towards us, it lets them know that their efforts are appreciated.
Not only that, but we might be able to learn something from how they do it!
10. Introduce people with a few words about their strengths or achievements
There’s this guy I know (he’s a friend of my sister’s) who is most definitely the second most encouraging person I’ve ever met!
