At least every couple of weeks. I do mine once a week most of the year, and every other week in the winter, due to the cold. The reason I do it once a week for my dog is A. She gets so dirty at the dog park, and B. That's what I found with poodles is that you have to bathe them about once a week.
I have two dogs, a sheltie and a mixed breed. The Sheltie needs to be bathed every 4 to 6 weeks or she gets a doggie odor. The mixed breed has only had two baths her entire 6 years of life. She just does not smell like a dog! You can bury your nose into her fur and no odor....its pretty amazing. It must be the breeds she a mix of. Anyway, even if you are using products handmade by your therapist, it could have an adverse effect on the dog and actually cause the dog to smell worse if you use something that irritates its skin. Brushing the dog thoroughly every day and using a grooming spray that can be found in a good pet store will also help with the doggie odor. There are also spray on products that are okay to use on a dog that take away odor. Dirty or infected ears can cause a dog to smell bad, as well as impacted anal glands.
You should bathe your dog once every 6 months. But if they're really active dogs that like to roll around in the mud and stuff like that, they should be bathed about once every 3 months.
Its not good to wash them very often because they're coats get oily and dirty very quickly - kind of like humans - so if your ex washes his only once a year and they smell, then maybe he should wash them more often.
But dogs will be dogs! They always smell no matter how often you wash them. lol
Usually once a month is acceptable. Depends on the dogs. My Spaniels loved swimming in the swamp water behind our store so he got baths/hosed down every day.
Three to four times a year is enough or you'll wash all the natural oils from their coats. You can, if they get very messy outside or roll in fox poo or similar bathe them more often but then you have to ensure that they have sufficient vitamins and oils in their diet so that their coats don't become coarse and their skin doesn't suffer.
Aparently some people who feed their dog a raw diet can go for a whole year without bathing thier dog... I read it on http://rawfed.com/
However for dogs that are fed a high quality dry food diet, I would say 1-2 times a month.
When they stink. Just out of curiosity - Why is this an issue Now, with an ex-boyfriend.
They should typically only be bathed when dirty - think about wild dogs, no ones groomin' them. Also, you don't want to dry out their skin & coat
I give my doxie a bath once a month. You dont want to it to offten or it will make their skin very dry. They need their natrual oil to keep their skin nice.
my aunt bathes hers once a week, but she says she bathes buddy a lot more than other people.
