Answer:
To understand the mutiny, some knowledge prior to the rebellion would be useful. The Indian army was composed of Madras, Bombay, and Bengal with the Madras and Bombay forming mostly people from the lower caste while Bengal mainly consisted of wealthy Muslims and high caste Indians. The East Indian company ruled most of India prior to the British occupation. When the Enfield rifle was rumored to contain pig and cow fat and needed to be bitten to open the cartridge, this caused tensions among the Indian soldiers. Eventually, Mangal Pandey attacked a British sergeant and wounded an adjutant. He was arrested and hanged along with an Indian soldier that refused to arrest him. This caused mutiny to erupt among soldiers.
The mutiny eventually failed due to the British calling for reinforcements and the rebellion being disorganized. This caused the British to withdraw the East India Company and start ruling the Indians directly.
The Indian Mutiny of 1857 would possibly not happen if the rifles were withdrawn immediately or weren't issued to the Indian soldiers. However, it is possible a different rebellion would occur due to the growing discontent of the Indians towards British imposed rules such as:
→The Doctrine Lapse: states that a Hindu ruler without a natural-born heir would be prohibited from acquiring another heir by means of adoption and after the death or abdication of the ruler, their lands would be annexed. This angered most of the Brahmans on top of the increasing restrictions of the East India Company.
→Increasing Westernization: At the time, Christian missionaries were increasingly pushing their religion on the Hindu religion, causing tensions such as the Vellore Mutiny, where the Indians and Muslims rebelled due to violating their religious practices such as forcing Muslims to shave their beard, Indians being forced to remove their religious marks, etc.
