The vet did a blood test on him and he is NOT diabetic. Now, he is on anti-biotic to overcome any bronchitis if any. The problem is that the cause of panting is not yet clearly diagnosed. Blood test showed things are normal. When I give him Bendril he cools down and his panting become much less. Does anyone know what can be the reason ! Thanks for you answer.

I have a 13 years old yellow lab and he is panting a lot lately.?

From what Im told panting can be a sign of a underlying problem. It could be jsut bc of the weather. Is he drinking a lot of water? Does he act as if hes in pain? Panting can also be a sign of a dog in pain
Old Dog Panting A Lot
The wether is heating up so naturally dogs are going to pant. They pant a a means to cool down. It is how they sweat. THere may be nothing to worry about. If something is wrong then your dog wouldn't be acting like his usual self by sleeping more, not eating, or not drinking. Is you lab eating any of the food that was on the dogfood recall list? If so it might be kidney failure. Your vet would know this from a test. Good luck and I hope everything turns out for the better for you and your lab.
My boyfriend's yellow lab, approximately the same age did the same thing. The vet couldn't find anything either and felt it was arthritis and put her on pain pills and anti inflammatory meds. The meds did help. The dog lasted about 4 months. The autopsy showed that she had a tumor in her spine.
Your dog might have arthritis. Think about how you react to pain...panting/breathing hard is a natural response to pain. I'm not a vet, just a student nurse.
I would ask the vet about arthritis.
Did the vet check ur Lab`s thyroid when he ran blood work for diabetes, he could possibly have a thyroid condition that is causing him to overheat. There is medication specifically for this condition. Is ur dog overweight ? Labs had a tendency to get rather chunky in old age which also adds to breathing problems. The vet should have been able to detect fluid in his lungs if he listened to his chest and heart. U might consider taking him to another vet for a second opinion if his excess panting continues. Good luck with ur dear old buddy.
I have a 13 year old lab too. She is kinda like your dog but her problem's where fixed and were not as bad as your dogs. Our vet said that if it was worse she would have to be put down because it was no use to do surgery because she was so old. If i were you I would take her to my vet as soon as possible.
Panting is the dog's way of cooling off-perhaps you could try keeping you pet in a cooler area now that we know the test were negative. The body temperature in dogs run much higher than in humans. Keep water constantly available for him. Good luck to you and your pet.
My 12 year old German Shepard has also started panting more than usual. I brush her every day, turn on the ceiling fan and the ac. When she gets comfortable her breathing becomes normal again. It seems she doesn't tolerate the heat as well as she use to.
could be allergies...could be heart failure...did the vet check his heart (blood/oxygen values ???) if not..see another vet that will help you...I think a 13 old dog that struggles to breathe needs to see a vet NOW...he's old for a big dog...the bigger the dog, usually the younger they are when they die. and I'm not saying he's dying...but be prepared.
the vet should do a chest x-ray, was he tested for cancer or a pancreatic problem? sorry to say but your dog is old, it may just be that time.
