You really don't have a option for seed unless you have a weed and grass-free lawn of just dirt. If that's the case you can go with Zoysia, Bermuda, or Buffalo grass. But most yards in Houston either have (or will have) St. Augustine grass. This is sold in sodded flates. Don't try to mix summertime grasses.
Weeds in the sidewalks? Use a glycophospate spray like Roundup. That's your safest bet.
And, last of all, here's the straight dope on fertilizer for Houston lawns:
FERTILIZE - four times a year:
Late February-Early March - apply a simple 15-5-10 for an early green-up. Most companies that make slow-release fertilizers also make a nonslow-release 15-5-10 that provides for a quick two-week green up before we get to the heart of the fertilizer schedule. Don't use a weed-and-feed (see herbicides below).
Late March-Early April - apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers.
Recommended formulations:
19-4-10 Nitro Phos Super Turff
18-4-6 Fertilome Southwest Greenmaker
18-0-6 Fertilome's Zero Phosphate Formula
15-5-10 Southwest Fertilizer Premium Gold
19-5-9 Easy Gro Premium
21-5-10 Mr. C's (Cornelius brand)
Late June-Early July - apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers.
(recommended formulations 19-5-9, 19-4-10, 18-4-6, 15-5-10.)
October-November - apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness. Ratios vary, but make sure they are "winter" or "fall" formulas designed for southern grasses.
(examples: 18-6-12, 8-12-16, 10-5-14) Will make lawns winter-hardy.
June-September - if turfgrass looks yellow (chlorosis) or necrotic, use an application of either granular or liquid iron. Once a year should be enough.
FUNGICIDE - two times a year:
July-September - Gray Leaf Spot is a blotchy spot on the grass blade leafs. (mostly on St. Augustine lawns) Use fungicides with active ingredients like Daconil, Consan or Banner.
September-October - To control the dreaded Brownpatch fungal disease (symmetrical brown circles in the grass) you must prevent it from coming up with a systemic lawn fungicide with Bayleton, Terrachlor, Banner or Benomyl.
HERBICIDE - three times a year:
(Pre-Emergent controls to prevent weeds)
Late October-Early November - Use two (2) different pre-emergent herbicides, to prevent the weeds that we experience in February and March. First is a pre-emergent with Portrait or Gallery for broadleaf weeds like clover. Second, use a pre-emergent with Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan for grassy weeds like poa anna or annual bluegrass. There is also Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control.
February-March - Use the pre-emergent controls for grassy weeds again, to prevent such weeds as Crabgrass, Goosegrass and Dallisgrass from popping up late in the spring and summer. Again, use the grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan. There is also Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control.
May-Early June - One more application of a grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan, or Treflan will keep fall weeds from invading from August on. There is also Barricade, Dimension-based or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control.
INSECTICIDES — Do not put down insecticides unless you know you have a problem. However, be prepared during the hot summer months — July through September — to attack chinch bug damage. This will show up as irregular shaped spots in the lawn along the concrete. Any liquid insecticide, like Permethrin or Cypermethrin, will treat the spot well. Then apply a granular insecticide like Deltamethrin or granular Permethrin in a broadcast applicator throughout the rest of the yard.
In the winter you can use rye grass seed, which grows like crazy, so be prepared to mow, but it will die out when the weather warms up. If you water your St. Augustine grass (which is what most people have since it does well here) regularly, it will usually choke out the weeds especially if you have a lot of sun on your lawn. Round-up is good for the grass in the sidewalk joints. There are also quite a few good fertilizers that will help with the weed problem -- just go to the garden dept at Home Depot or Lowe's -- they'll help you pick the right one.
Scotts makes a fertilizer good for the area. It is called Southern Turf Builder. I use it on my St. Augustine (I live near Austin) and it works really well.
If you want a lawn that is green year round, you will probably need to overseed with a perennial rye grass in the fall. Make sure you use the winter seed so that it will grow during the winter and keep your yard green year round, it will die back in the spring when your regular lawn is coming out of dormancy.
As for your weeds, pulling them works well, as long as you get the root, but its a lot of work. Round Up is good alternative, if you dont mind using a chemical. Good Luck!
Not sure about seed, St. Augustine grass does best here, but does not come in seed just sod. You can put Bermuda seed for winter, but will not last through summer due to heat. You can us round up or season long grass/weed killer on cracks and flower beds...do not spray or over spray on spots you do not want to kill (leaves of shrubs, grass or small trees)
You can always go to local nursery for the best advise.
For the weed infestation What I do is pore boiling hot water on the weeds they disappear in a real big hurry that is if you do not wish to use a chemical. If you want a chemical B-Gone is a good one to use But be careful with it if it is a windy day as whatever it touches it kills.
Some people used to use gasoline on the weeds some time ago and another idea is over fertilize it will eat itself to death.
I relatively have lived right here 24 years and that i like Houston. it relatively is somewhat crowded, even with the undeniable fact that it relatively relies upon the place you go. i latterly spent 2 months in la California thinking i wished to head accessible, and that i hated it!!! it is purely too crowded, grimy and the anybody is impolite everywhere. I had heard that of Houston human beings yet in evaluation Houstonians are candy and captivating. I relatively have a clean appreciation for my native land.the climate could nicely be somewhat loopy, you are able to desire to be donning shorts sooner or later and a turtle neck the subsequent. however the way I see it you get to adventure all of it. no longer all cities can say that. we are a important city, yet yet you're close adequate to different smaller locations to flow to, like San Antonio, Fredricksburg. everywhere else is extra high priced whilst it comprises genuine belongings. you are able to desire to purchase a huge abode for what you will by potential of a small total interior the wall someplace like ny or California.
