Menstrual Cycle
Answer: (copied from the given paragraph)
Once a month, an egg cell is released from an ovary. Every time an egg cell is released, the uterus prepares itself for implantation. This is when a thick lining of blood vessels slowly develops. If the egg is fertilized it passes into the uterus and attaches itself to the thickened lining. If the egg is not fertilized the uterus lining breaks down and is expelled through the vagina. This process is called menstruation and is often referred to as a period. The whole sequence of changes in developing a new uterine lining and producing an egg is called the menstrual cycle.
Explanation:
The menstrual cycle is a complex process. Several hormones and glands are involved. Monthly, the ovary releases a mature egg cell. As the egg cell travels through the fallopian tube for possible fertilization, the uterus starts to prepare for the attachment of fertilized egg. This uterine lining will serve as support to the growing embryo. However, if the egg is not fertilized, the thickened uterine lining sheds off in the process known as menstruation. Menstruation eliminates the thickened lining of the uterus through the vagina. This contains blood, cells from the lining of the uterus, and mucus. Menstruation takes three days to one week. After a month, the cycle repeats. There is an average of 28 days for the complete menstrual cycle to complete.
