In my opinion, it should be based on Filipino culture. I think that is what Filipinos are known for—being a very hardworking and industrious people who have contributed to world history through their innovations and inventions. So when we look at our national anthem or any of our songs, they reflect this fact. Our national heroes like Jose Rizal, Emilio Aguinaldo, Antonio Luna, etc., all had great contributions to the development of the country as well as its future direction. We can see them even today in some parts of the Philippines which still bear their names. This shows us how much these men really meant to our nation’s progress. And so if I composed an opera about one of those heroes, then what better way than by using his name, since he has already done something worthy enough for the entire country! As long as we remain proud of our heritage and continue to learn from past mistakes, then there will always be hope for a brighter tomorrow.
