The central theme of the poem is doomed love, hopeless from the start.

Verse 1- the poet ruminates about how good it is to be loved by someone, because there is one to share your sufferings and pain
Verse 2- the poet hints that her fate is appearing bleak and hopeless and she suffers because of it
Verse 3- the poet thinks that a relationship between her and her love is unlikely
Verse 4- the poet feels depressed and down because of this realization, and laments her birth to this world
Verse 5- the poet is immobilized because she knows that being lesbian, the girl may not be willing to be in a relationship with her
Verse 6- despite this, the poet still proclaims her love for the girl as her greatest joy, and says that she'd only give her life to her only

The story was based off of the writer's own experience of loving a woman as a lesbian herself.
