So say you have a public park. Say that you know the park is 1000 feet long and 300 feet wide. You have been asked to build a sidewalk along the the 2 diagonals. Your sidewalk must be 4 feet wide; but how long will it be? Well the answer will be :
√(100²+300²)
So technically I did not use the ‘distance formula (I used the Pythagorean Theory). So to make this more challenging say that the park is in New York city. Say that you live in Chicago and cannot travel to New York so you must read the size of the park from a map drawn to scale. reading the length of the park from the map will be your horizontal coordinates X₁ and X₂. Likewise finding the width will be the same as finding Y₁ and Y₂. Tn you substitute these values into the distance formula and you essentially have the Pythagorean Theory adopted to finding the length of your sidewalks.
NOTE: My explanation may be somewhat confusing . The ‘distance formula’ is the Pythagorean Theory . The distance formula takes the Pythagorean theory one step further by adopting it to be used when reading from a graph/map.
