Explanation:
Goal 8 aims to develop a global partnership for development. The targets most relevant to the mandate of FAO relate to the special needs of least developed countries (LCDs), landlocked countries and small island developing states; the trading and financial system; and new information and communication technology (ICT).
Much of FAO’s work of reducing hunger and improving agriculture and food security is directed to least developed countries, including landlocked countries and small island developing states. In 2009, FAO’s field programme delivered US$715 million in technical assistance and emergency and rehabilitation operations and started 2010 with an available budget of over US$1.5 billion.
FAO, working with its Members States and the World Trade Organization (WTO), is an active partner in efforts to create an open, fair and rules-based multilateral trading system, in particular through its support for food, agricultural trade and overall trade policies conducive to food security.
FAO provides advice and technical assistance for governments, institutions and rural communities to strengthen capacities in agricultural information management and the use of modern information and communication technologies (ICT). This is underpinned by capacity building through the Information Management Resource Kit (IMARK), the Agricultural Information Management Standards (AIMS) community, and follow up activities of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
FAO also supports the e-Agriculture Community, a global network of 11,000 practitioners (80% in developing countries) who use ICT in their work. The e-Agriculture Community facilitates the exchange of good practices, addressing challenges, and networking in the field. Partnerships with the public and private sectors play a central role in all of these activities
