Using General Social Survey data, this research examines whether the political self‐identifications “liberal,” “moderate,” and “conservative” have consensual meanings in terms of shared social and political attitudes. Results indicate there is a large degree of consensus as to the meaning of liberal and a moderate degree for moderate and conservative. The research also shows that the marginality of liberals and liberal attitudes has been greatly exaggerated, as has been the shift toward conservativism during the Reagan era of 1980 to 1988. Results indicate more of a shift toward liberal than conservative attitudes during this time.
