Hi, I need some educated advise on Road tax classes. No one knows here-Even the motor tax office. Basically, I was given a small van from england a Renault extra 1987 1.4 petrol and I intended to use it privately as im not a trader.
The problem is that I registered the van and went to tax it but the tax office said I need a DOE. I had previosly tried to NCT it but the NCT centre told me they dont NCT vans.
So I had a DOE done and it passed. went to motor tax office to tax it AS they wouldnt tax it before without the DOE done and passed. When I went to motor tax office to tax van I said I needed a garda stamp of declaration of trade- ie I said I am a painter. Back to tax office again 4th time- when I said i wanted to use van for non -commerical use- They said I didnt need the DOE -which cost nearly 90 euros and the trade declaration but I needed a NCT!!!!!! YES i am pulling my hair out now- I said i have the DOE and the NCT wont test vans. I gave up as know one knows. Commerical -----
Update:motor tax was 273 euros for 1 year and 323 euros privately--Is that right. If I tax it privately I dont need a DOE or NCT. NCT dont do vans and DOE is only for commerical purposes. Whats the score here.
Also I have a Classic car -how old must it be before reduced car tax----ie,1981 car 2.0 litre which Im not using.
Please help. Thanks.

Can't help on van, but as far as I remember a 'classic' has to be pre-1967. Google and contact the Irish Vintage and Veteran Car Club, (IVVCC), Sorry, lost conact with them so don't have up to date contact info, but they will have the answer to the classic. Some of the IVCC members are in the motor trade (I'm thinking of Jim Boland of Naas) & might have some of the 'van' answers.
