Is -5 bigger than -3?
No. With negative numbers, the bigger the negative number is, the smaller it gets. For example, -1 is bigger than -10 or -100.
If we look at it in a straight line (see attached image), the farther it is from zero (0), the smaller it gets. Now comparing -5 and -3, -3 is closest to zero than -5, that’s why -3 is bigger than -5.
