China
Instrumental Music: Instrumental pieces played on an erhu or dizi are popular, and are often available outside of China, but the pipa and zheng music, which are more traditional, are more popular in China itself.
Vocal Music: Chinese vocal music has traditionally been sung in a thin, non resonant voice or in falsetto and is usually solo rather than choral. All traditional Chinese music is melodic rather than harmonic. Chinese vocal music probably developed from sung poems and verses with music.
Arts and Crafts: China is a treasure house of arts and crafts, which are an important part of the Nation's cultural inheritance. Products such as carving, embroidery, pottery and porcelain, glassware and dyeing, replicas of ancient cultural relics are all exquisitely crafted. Other well-known crafts are weaving, printing and dyeing.
Japan
Instrumental Music: One of the most popular traditional Japanese wind instruments is the shakuhachi. Better known as the Japanese flute, this instrument has been used by Zen Buddhists as a spiritual tool for meditation practices known as ‘suizen’. Held vertically, the shakuhachi has four holes on the front and one on the back and is traditionally made of bamboo.
Vacal Music: Gagaku is court music, and is the oldest traditional music in Japan. It was usually patronized by the Imperial Court or the shrines and temples. Gagaku music includes songs, dances, and a mixture of other Asian music. Gagaku has two styles; these are instrumental music kigaku and vocal music seigaku.
Arts and Crafts: Calligraphy is one of the most admired Japanese arts. Along with kanji, or Japanese characters, calligraphy was imported from China during the Heian Period over one thousand years ago. There are many different styles of calligraphy.
Korea
Instrumental Music: The piri, danso, taepyeongso are vertical instruments, while the daegeum and sogeum are transverse flutes. The piri is a Korean double reed instrument made of bamboo.
Vocal Music: Narrative songs are found in the genre called kasa accompanied by a flute and drum. A Korean puk (or buk), a barrel drum of the type that accompanies p'ansori narrative singing. Kagok, sijo, and kasa are all types of court music. The dominant narrative form of music performed today, however, is the folk genre p'ansori.
Arts and Crafts: Korean folk painting, calligraphy, Korean mulberry paper and clay dolls are just a few exquisite examples of traditional Korean arts. Korean arts and crafts including fine arts and decorative visual arts over the centuries: folk painting, calligraphy, mulberry paper (Hanji), clay dolls (Sila Tou).
