Anaxagoras, in contrast, proposed that the universe was made up of a substance that could be divided infinitely, or forever. ... Anaxagoras believed this principle was what he called nous or "mind." His theory was that nous set unarranged matter in the universe into motion and created order from it.
Anaxagoras, (born c. 500 bce, Clazomenae, Anatolia [now in Turkey]—died c. 428, Lampsacus), Greek philosopher of nature remembered for his cosmology and for his discovery of the true cause of eclipses. He was associated with the Athenian statesman Pericles.
According to Anaxagoras, the Mind (nous) is infinite and self-powered. Mind is the supreme principle, the greatest power, that is mixed with nothing but it exists alone itself by itself, whereas all other entities include a portion of everything. Mind is the purest of all entities, with a unique authenticity.
