PASSAGE 16: Have you ever wondered why plants are green? It may seem to be an unimportant question, but if plants weren’t green, there wouldn’t be any life on this planet. The green color is caused by a chemical called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the only chemical able to turn the energy of sunlight into food for the plant. The plant also uses water and carbon dioxide to produce food and oxygen. Plants breathe out oxygen and breathe in carbon dioxide. People breathe out carbon dioxide and breathe in oxygen. This very basic balance is made possible by chlorophyll.
