What:
An earthquake is the shaking of the Earth's surface caused by a sudden release of energy in the lithosphere, which causes seismic waves.
When:
Earthquakes are typically caused by underground rock breaking along a fault line.
How to survive:
If you are in a car, pull over and stop. Set your parking brake.
If you are in bed, turn face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow.
If you are outdoors, stay outdoors away from buildings.
If you are inside, stay and do not run outside and avoid doorways.
Where:
Edges of Plates
The majority of earthquakes happen at the intersection of the oceanic and continental plates. The earth's crust (the planet's outer layer) is made up of plates, which are made up of many parts. Oceanic plates are found under the oceans, while continental plates are found on land. The motion of a deeper part of the earth (the mantle) that lies under the crust pushes the plates around.
