Plot of the Story
Beginning
''The Cask of Amontillado'' begins with the narrator Montresor explaining that a man called Fortunato has wronged him a thousand times over, but his insult is the final blow that has provoked his vow to revenge.
Climax
The climax of the story is when Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall of the catacombs. Montresor then ignores the screams of Fortunato for mercy. This is a picture of Fortunato being chained to the wall, and a wall being built in front of him.
Ending
At the end of the story, the narrator reveals that 50 years have passed since he took revenge and Fortunato's body has not been disturbed. Scholars have noted that Montresor's reasons for revenge are unclear and that he may simply be insane.
Lesson
Revenge is a central theme in "The Cask of Amontillado". Montresor feels very disrespected when Fortunato insults him and, as a result of that, Montresor vows revenge: “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borned as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.”
