Read the following situation and answer the following questions. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. The world's water supply is affected by pollution, which not only damages aquatic ecosystems but also makes their water unsafe for consumption. Fertilizer runoff is one serious cause of water pollution, as chemicals in fertilizers find their way to different bodies of water, most especially groundwater. Industrial chemicals and nitrates from farm fertilizers mix with groundwater then flow into streams. This contaminates the water supply used for drinking, affecting not only humans but animals as well. Health problems like methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder that also causes blue baby syndrome in infants) are associated with the nitrates used in fertilizers. High levels of nitrates also damage the environment by stimulating algae growth in bodies of water. The amount of oxygen in the water is reduced by this algae growth, thus, killing aquatic organisms and damaging aquatic ecosystems. Herbicides and pesticides enter the water supply in the same way. Humans and animals that ingest the water also ingest these chemicals that may causa poisoning, various diseases like cancer, and reproductive health problems. Another serious problem that affects our bodies of water is the disposal o plastic materials in them. Unfortunately, marine animals like pawikan, or large sea turtle, mistake transparent plastic bags to be jellyfish and ingest the bags, resulting in death for these creatures.

Question:
*in your own way, how can you contribute toward protecting the Philippines' aquatic ecosystems?
-Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away.
*what measures can you help undertake or implement to prevent water pollution?
-Globally, agriculture accounts for 70% of water resources, so it is essential to have climate-friendly crops, efficient irrigation that reduces the need for water and energy-efficient food production. Green agriculture is also crucial to limit the chemicals that enter the water.
