[tex]\cal{ANSWER:}[/tex]
[tex]r=3[/tex]
[tex]\cal{SOLUTION:}[/tex]
In an equation, what we do is we perform several inverse operations to leave the variable in the equation completely alone on one side, which is usually the left side.
First, I am going to transpose 5 to the other side, with the opposite sign:
[tex]\to\boldsymbol{\sf{5r+5=20}}[/tex]
[tex]\to\boldsymbol{\sf{5r=20-5}}[/tex]
I simplify.
[tex]\to\boldsymbol{\sf{5r=15}}[/tex]
Next, I divide by 5 both sides.
[tex]\to\boldsymbol{\sf{r=3}}[/tex]
[tex]\cal{VERIFY:}[/tex]
It's never a waste of time to check your answer, because the last thing you need is a wrong answer. I am going to plug in 3 into the equation, and then simplify:
[tex]\to\boldsymbol{\sf{5(3)+5=20}}\\\to\boldsymbol{\sf{15+5=20}}\\\to\boldsymbol{\sf{20=20}}[/tex]
Since the left-hand side is the same as the right-hand side, we know that [tex]r=3[/tex] is the correct solution to the equation.
I hope I've made the concepts clear enough for you!
