The poem opens by asking whether the speaker should compare the young man to a "summer's day." In line three, he refuses, implicitly, to compare the young man to the "darling buds of May." In line five, he returns to summer as a symbol—and again refuses it, this time on the grounds that summer doesn't last long enough ...
