1. Eyepiece/Ocular Lens.
Explanation: The eyepiece, or ocular, magnifies the primary image produced by the objective; the eye can then use the full resolution capability of the objective. The microscope produces a virtual image of the specimen at the point of most distinct vision, generally 250 mm (10 in.)
2. Coarse Adjustment/Coarse Adjustment Knob.
Explanation: The coarse adjustment knob located on the arm of the microscope moves the stage up and down to bring the specimen into focus. The gearing mechanism of the adjustment produces a large vertical movement of the stage with only a partial revolution of the knob.
3. Body Tube.
Explanation: Separates the objective and the eyepiece and assures continuous alignment of the optics.
4. Arm.
Explanation: Connects the body tube to the base of the microscope. Coarse adjustment: Brings the specimen into general focus.
5. Mirror.
Explanation: It is used to reflect light from an external light source up through the bottom of the stage.
6. Stage.
Explanation: This is are often equipped with a mechanical device that holds the specimen slide in place and can smoothly translate the slide back and forth as well as from side to side.
7. Revolving Nosepiece.
Explanation: It is holds two or more objective lenses and can be rotated to easily change power (magnification).
8. Objective Lens.
Explanation: Usually you will find 3 or 4 objective lenses on a microscope. They almost always consist of 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x powers.
9. Base.
Explanation: The bottom of the microscope, used for support.
10. Diaphragm.
Explanation: It has different sized holes and is used to vary the intensity and size of the cone of light that is projected upward into the slide.
