QUESTION
What is the sum of 5 3/4 and 8/9?
SOLUTION
Convert the mixed number to improper fraction
[tex]5 \frac{3}{4} = 5 + \frac{3}{4} \\ = \frac{5 \times 4}{4} + \frac{3}{4} \\ = \frac{20}{4} + \frac{3}{4} \\ = \frac{23}{4} [/tex]
Now we can add the two fractions 23/4 and 8/9
To add these find their common denominator. Which is in this case their common denominator is 36 ( the least common multiple of 4 and 9)
[tex] \frac{23 \times 9}{4 \times 9} + \frac{8 \times 4}{9 \times 4} = \frac{207}{36} + \frac{32}{36} [/tex]
Now that they have the same denominator, add their numerator and copy/keep the common denominator.
ANSWER
239/36 but if the simplified term is required then 79/12 is the answer.
I hope it helps!
