"And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted Him, saying Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" (Luke 10:25)
A lawyer or a Jewish teacher of the Law came to Jesus to test Him with a question about eternal life. He thought of eternal life as something to be obtained by some special act. But Jesus replied to Him, answering, "thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbor as thyself." (v. 27)
But the lawyer is willing to justify himself so he asked Jesus, "who is my neighbor?"
Then Jesus told him the parable of a Samaritan, which they hated so much.
