I have read in some articles that he was born in Vietnam, and in other articles they say he was born in China. I'm just curious to know which Asian community will do the mourning. It is interesting because Henry Lee faced the exact same obstacles as Cho (both were Asians learning a new language, culture, ect). But Lee did not become a raving lunatic bent on revenge. Instead, Henry Lee was a real winner, exactly the opposite of Cho.

Virginia Tech victim Henry Lee, was he born in Vietnam or China?
Verified answer
I've read that his original name was Ly Hien (family name is Ly, given name is Hien - that's the way it's said in Viet Nam). So that would lead me to think that he's Vietnamese. But he could have been ethnically a Chinese person who was born in Viet Nam, as someone else said.
Ly is a common Vietnamese family name (last name). When pronounced, to English speakers, it sounds similar to "Lee". But there are a variety of accents in the Vietnamese language that English speakers can't distinguish, so most English speakers wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the pronunciation of Ly and Lee.
I read in a news report, that he changed his name from Hien Ly to Henry Lee when he became a naturalized citizen in 1999. I'm assuming that he changed his name from Ly to Lee because more Americans recognize the name Lee, and know how to pronounce it.
Also, I've read in news articles, that he was born in Viet Nam, but was living in China when he came to the U.S. It's common for Vietnamese immigrants or refugees to go to another nearby Asian country to wait for the right to come to the U.S.
"We are overcome with grief at the tragedy occurring on April 16 at Virginia Tech, which claimed 32 lives, most of whom were students. We express our deepest condolences to families of the victims, including the family of the American Vietnamese victim Ly Hien (Henry Lee), as well as U.S. people," Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung said at a regular press briefing.
I assume Vietnamese.
Henry Lee is Vietnamese though he immigrated to the States from China. Alot of immigrants have to move to other countries before they qualify to come to the United states.
most likely Henry lee was from china.
but cho did not become a raving lunatic when he came to the USA. cho already had mental problems at a very young age. his great aunt from Korea said cho had mental problems when he was a child.
He was born in Vietnam, but is ethnically Chinese. His parents fled from China to Vietnam a few decades ago, and then after Henry was born, they came to America
It doesn't matter where he was born. He was a very troubled young man who didn't get the help he needed. If people had the foresight to see the potential for disaster instead of treating him as an oddity, then perhaps all those innocent victims wouldn't be dead. This was a lose lose situation!
Cho did NOT become mentally ill because he couldn't adjust to the new culture... Are you saying all the immigrants are mentally ill??????????
