II. DIRECTIONS: READ THE SELECTION BELOW AND CONNECT IT TO YOUR EXPERIENCE BY ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS THAT FOLLOW. a We discovered our first vampires in the cave of Los Sabinos, about 200 miles south of the Mexican border. The village of Los Sabinos consisted of half a dozen thatched huts deep in the jungle, a few people, and several sheep, pigs, and goats. I spent some time talking to the Indians, as I was curious to find out what sort of people would voluntarily live next to a community of vampire bats. The villagers discussed the bats as calmly as New Jerseyites would talk about mosquitoes. The bats came every night to feed on their stock - and on them. The villagers retired to their huts as soon as the sun went down and carefully filled in every chink. If anyone forgot a chink, when he awoke the next morning, he would learn that a vampire had found his mistake. When the animals got bitten so badly they became weak, the villagers took them into the huts, too.
