During both mitosis and meiosis, chromosomes align in the center of the cell and are then pulled apart. They are pulled apart with spindle fibers. Spindle fibers are made out of microtubules.
All our diploid cells have two sets of chromosomes; one set from our mother, and one set from our father. When our cells undergo mitosis, our maternal and paternal sets divide as well. In meiosis, our homologous chromosomes (one set from mom and one set from dad) undergo recombination and produce a unique set of chromosomes. Each gamete that is formed from meiosis has DNA that is genetically different from the parental germline cell that it came from, and it is also different from the other gametes from the same parent.
