My locale gourmet grocer is selling it for $499.99/ per pound!
I thought it was a marked mistake.
Why is the truffle mushroom so expensive?!

Rare, delicacy and delicious are common words that would describe one of the most popular and famous mushrooms of all time - the truffle. Truffles are among some of the most expensive foods in the world; in fact, winter black truffle mushrooms can go from $300 - $500 US per pound. There are also quite a lot of varieties in the truffles. The truffles are highly sought over and, have a huge price market.
Truffles are mainly found in France, Italy, and Slovenia in the forests where Oak, Elm, Chestnut, Pine, and Willow trees are. They are very rare to find though, and are hard to grow commercially as well as the cost and the price would not be able to average out at all; thus, their high price tags.
Truffle mushroom have mushrooms which are similar to themselves. In fact, there are many poisonous mushrooms out there which resemble the truffle mushrooms, and there are some mushrooms which resemble the truffle mushroom but are not the truffle mushrooms at all. There can be much confusion among the real identity of the truffle mushrooms at most times, and the job is best left for the professionals.
There are many different types of truffles though - each having its own quality and characteristics which makes it stand out from the crowd. For one, more than three dozen types of truffles exist, and each has their own benefits. They range in sizes, homeland, and even in appearance at times. Most of the time, truffles are irregular-shaped, and potato-sized. Some of them do not look very delicious at all.
The taste of truffle mushroom is supposed to be a nice mushroom taste with a hint of garlic. Most restaurants will serve these delicious mushrooms uncooked.
The truffle mushrooms are an interesting group of mushrooms, and a delicacy too. They're not only expensive, but the most famous of all mushrooms.
I hope this was helpful,Take Care!!! :)
Sometimes Depends If Just Truffles I Doubt Its Expensive. But If Like For Candy And Stuff Maybe.Im Not Sure.I Used To Buy Lot Of Those But I Don't Remember How Much They Were.
Growing a truffle has been met with stiff failure. Seems these little boogers have to be grown in the wild. Trained animals are used to unearth these delights. And truffles seem to only grow in France. Can you imagine the expense of making a good truffle oil?
Things that are scarce are expensive, therefore even though I don't know a lot about truffle mushrooms most likely they are expensive because they are rare, not abundant, and not easily grown.
Truffles are found throughout Europe but are most common in France and Italy. They are also found in Oregon and Washington states in the USA.
The price that you saw probably was not a misprint. Truffles are rare.
An easy, less expensive way to enjoy the flavor of truffles is by using truffle oil. You can get a small bottle of truffle flavored oil for less than $20 US. Use the oil to finish a dish, not to cook. For example, use it in place of butter in mashed potatoes for a great flavor treat. Use the oil quickly - it does go bad.
Truffles are really tasty, but my fungus of choice is the morel mushroom, or perhaps huitalacoche. There are so many good things to eat.
Enjoy your exploration of edible fungus!
Buen Provecho!
Well they're a type of mushroom grown mainly in France. Now I know they're expensive but 499.99/ per pound sounds a bit over priced. Now I recall Julia Child saying something like maybe 49.99/ per pound. So its probably a misprint.
I understand that they grow underground and that it takes a certain type of pig to sniff them out. Like gold, you can't plant it and wait for it to grow. A classic case of scarcity and competitive demand driving up the price.
