In september 1 1939, the German Army launched an offensive against Poland and on the East was the Red Army of the Soviet Union. The Polish and its Home Army fought valiantly against both forces for 35 days straight.
An estimated Polish casualties is around 66,000 dead, 133,700 wounded and 694,000 captured. The German casualties was at around 16,000 dead, 3,500 missing, 33,000 wounded. The Russians suffered 1,475 killed or missing and 2,383 wounded.
One thing to note:
5 months after the invasion, the Katyn Massacre took place. It was a massacre carried out by the NKVD against officers of the Home Army of Poland to crush all hopes of resistance. It was later found out by the Germans later on and was blamed for it by the USSR. 22,000 officers died in Katyn.
