It's a way of stopping people from copying games I guess. A PS2/PS1 format disc is one that is written in a format that the console can read, which means no copying PS2 games into a normal disc, unfortunately ='[
I'm sure there is some way to get it to load other types of discs, like chipping it, but I wouldn't reccomend that 'coz it can **** it up.
PS1 Format disc is a game disc that was made for Playstation 1. PS2 format disc is a game disc that was made for Playstation 2. On a PS3 if you have a 60 or 80GB you can play these games, the PS1 format will be shown as black and the PS2 as orange, this is where the blue PS3 icon usually is.
I can add to the answer above that PS2 games can be played on 20GB, 60GB and 80GB PS3 and PS1 games can be played on any PS3.
