The main function of the small intestine is absorbing most nutrients from the food you eat into the bloodstream. When the food enters the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum, a yellowish or greenish viscous fluid called bile is secreted by the liver to break down the fats. Pancreas also releases enzymes responsible for breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and other fats. After absorbing the necessary nutrients, the "food" (the chyme, a mixture of food and acidic juices) goes to the large intestine for the final stage of absorption.
